Art for the people, by the people

"Every human being is an artist, a freedom being, called to participate in transforming and reshaping the conditions, thinking and structures that shape and inform our lives." - Joseph Beuys, 1979

"Everything used to be better," dixit everyone's grandfather. Before corona, the arts lived cheerfully and freely, only to be suddenly immersed in much-needed constraints, for the sake of everyone's health. We could hold back, or use this time to look at the arts through a magnifying glass.

Contemporary art should be intertwined with contemporary society in every way, but simply for the banal reason of being made now is not enough. Art cannot remain just an object made by people and viewed by people, because from that moment on it loses its created and potential essence. The real function of an artistic installation transcends the material element.

In order to take a step forward, we must take a step back: reduce art to its original essence, namely the human being, in order to be able to open ourselves again to what moves within us.

This heralds a movement towards a new, old aesthetics of reality by analogy with the idea of Joseph Beuys in which everyone is an artist and everything is art, which manifests itself in two different ways. One human being as an individual body, society as a whole as the collective body. The individual body is part of the collective body, dialogue in the form of community building is an indispensable instrument to connect both.

"What is art" is an age-old question, of which we pretend not to know the answer, while we know very well what the answer is not. Participatory arts, arts that move to the people instead of waiting for the people to move to them, do not fall under the arts in our general idea.

While that is the most important task of the arts and the artist; move and mingle with and among its audience, the common people, without expecting them to cross the enormous barrier to the white cube. Behind this is an unclear idea of art with a mysterious concept of the artist as an alternative person, who observes society from his glass tower and criticizes or draws attention to it through artistic expression.

People need each other, need to get in touch with each other, to teach each other, to open the eyes and world of others. The artist functions as a mediator and educator between the people, who discover and exceed their limits in their own environment. The artist can realize utopias in site-specific situations as a stepping stone to see them effectively develop outside the artwork, by planting a seed from which beautiful trees with strong roots can grow.
Participatory art as community building provides those foundations that are vital in a cohesive society, with people who trust, help each other, and radiate, spread and internalize cheerfulness.

The presence of man is the main object and powerful medium of site-specific, participatory art. The artist is at the heart of society. This can feed the dialogue (both between people and between art and the public) with empathy as a carrier, and in that way ends up at the heart of society. The public is both recipient and initiator of the arts.

Contemporary art is located in the middle of society, among the people, with the artist as one of the people. Each art discipline automatically becomes participatory and site-specific and helps build the community.

Art saves the world.
